Narrative Biography
Caroline McKinley is an artist from Purcellville, Virginia. She is studying Art and Visual Technology at George Mason University and plans to earn a master’s degree in art education in the future. Before that, she studied psychology, which continues to inspire many of the ideas in her art. Her paintings focus on everyday life and routines, often working in a semi-realistic, painterly style and using color to show different moods and emotions. Her artwork explores memory, feelings, and mental health. She wants her art to connect with people and help them see experiences they can relate to in their own lives. Outside of school and her art practice, Caroline works as a server and has held various roles in teaching, caregiving, and supporting children. These experiences have strengthened her communication skills and deepened her interest in connecting with others through empathy and creativity. They have also encouraged her to combine art with education and use creativity to inspire and support young people. In the future, she hopes to share her work in both local and school exhibitions. Caroline’s goal is to continue growing as an artist and teacher while making art that connects people through emotion and story.

Artist Statement
Caroline McKinley creates work that explores the emotional depth within everyday life, turning ordinary moments into scenes of visual significance. Her paintings in oil and acrylic highlight subtle gestures, daily routines, and the quiet interactions that often go unnoticed. Expressive brushwork and painterly surfaces keep each piece active and immediate, allowing the process to remain visible and the imagery to feel alive.
Color plays a central role in McKinley’s practice. Bold palettes shift between warm, comforting tones and more intense, contemplative moods, shaping the emotional atmosphere of each work. Layered paint creates textured surfaces that mirror the richness and complexity of mundane experiences. A gentle sense of whimsy appears throughout the series, introducing imaginative details and playful moments that soften familiar scenes and reflect the natural rhythms of daily life.
McKinley also extends her exploration of routine, texture, and emotion through sculpture and multimedia work. Welded steel, carved wood, and mixed media constructions bring a three-dimensional perspective to her practice, emphasizing material presence and craftsmanship. These sculptural pieces deepen thematic connections across her work, allowing everyday experiences to be examined through physical form as well as color and surface.
By blending expressive painting, tactile materials, and imaginative interpretation, Caroline McKinley creates a body of work that encourages viewers to pause and reconsider the significance of ordinary moments. Her practice highlights how small, fleeting experiences carry emotional weight, revealing the quiet but powerful impact of daily life.
