Felting is a process that uses wool fibers to create shape, texture, and form. By working the wool with a needle or water, the fibers lock together and become more solid. It is important to build in thin layers and felt each part well so the piece stays together and does not fall apart. Felting also allows you to experiment because you can keep shaping and adjusting as you go. The final piece has a soft look but is still strong and holds its form.
Materials: Foam Pads, Fiber, and a Felting needle
Step 1: Gather materials
Start with a piece of fabric or felt, colored wool roving, a felting needle, and a foam pad.
Step 2: Lay down the first color
Place a small amount of wool roving onto the fabric. Spread it out into the shape you want.
Step 3: Begin felting
Use the felting needle to poke the wool straight up and down into the fabric. Be careful with your fingers.

Step 4: Add more colors
Layer different colors of wool on top of the first layer to create your design.
- Keep poking the wool with the needle until it starts to attach to the fabric. Add more wool if you want it thicker.

Step 6: Shape the details. Use smaller pieces of wool to add details, lines, or color changes. Felt each piece into place.
Step 7: Check your design. Lift the fabric gently to make sure the wool is attached. If it is loose, keep felting.

Tip: Add Smaller strips of fiber for finer details!

Keep going!

Step 8: Finish the artwork. Once the wool feels secure and the design looks complete, remove it from the foam pad.
Step 9: Clean up. Put the felting needle away safely and collect any extra wool scraps.

Advice:
- Felt more than you think you need.
-When attaching pieces, overlap the fibers and felt them together really well. If you just place one piece on top, it won’t stick.
-Smooth and refine at the end!
Safety Concerns: The felting needle is extremely sharp! Students must be careful and intentional with the needle!
History
This felt project was created using a process where fibers are pressed and worked together to form a solid material. Felt is one of the oldest types of textiles, with early examples found in Siberia dating back to around 300–238 BCE (Felting and Fiber Studio, 2013). These early pieces show that felt was used for both practical and decorative purposes, including clothing and detailed designs. The process of making felt has stayed very similar over time, relying on pressure and movement to connect fibers. Because of its long history, felt is still an important material in art and textiles today.
Reflection:
One thing others might not notice is how repetitive the process was. I had to keep layering and working the fibers many times to get them to fully connect. If I didn’t feel it enough, the material would start to peel and not stick together, so I had to go back and fix those areas.
I am most pleased with the colors and layering. The bright colors and overlapping fibers make the piece stand out and have more depth.
If I were to do this again, I would create a fully 3D figure instead of a 2D piece with some 3D parts. I would also spend more time exploring different forms.
