12 pc FABER-CASTELL

Price paid at Micheals : $9.99

  • Using these oil pastels were really fun, although there were a few difficulties. As you can see in this photo the lines were not very smooth. I started adding white for highlight and to blend the oil-pastels.

  • I used the corner of the pastel for thinner short lines. I kept having to go back over spaces because areas would smudge when adding a different color over.

  • As you can see the colors don't really blend easy. I found that doing slow circular motions helps the color build.

  • At this point I was trying to trust the process & added yellow to add some vibrancy. I kept having to carefully get the pastel-crumbles off my page. The black kept smearing on the petals.

  • I went back over with red, orange, and yellow to create more depth of color.

  • I took the orange to blend the beginning and ends of the petals. I created a green vine, which is not very smooth. Retracing the pastel back over it did the job!

  • The blue filled in so nice and solid.

  • Taking the blue, I cleaned up the lines and filled in the page. I also add leaves to the vine.

Taking white I put white highlights on the flower, trying give it more depth.

This is my final piece :)

Grade recommendation: 5th-12th

  • Takes more patience

  • smears easier than crayons

  • crumbles a lot

  • Can be time consuming

  • Harder to fix mistakes

Love what you created with the oil pastels! I find them intimidating and messy and because they are so thick I get frustrated with the lack of detail that I am able to achieve BUT you did a great job and have inspired me to maybe give them another shot. -Alex
