Watercolor art

 Materials

1. Brands and associated quality/cost of each (student grade vs. premium)

2. Age appropriateness (select a grade and related modifications)

  • 2nd grade+

  • Start with 3 colors and experiment with different uses

3. Additional resources or logistics required with the medium

  • to avoid line residue, softly color in a circular motion then repeat the motion with the water brush, and spread!

4. Strengths (what does it do well)

  • Great coverage

5. Limitations (what does it not do well)

  • Bad at blending harsh lines

  • The watercolor pencils are thin, so it may be hard for little hands to hold them.

  • Hand-strength control

6. Disclose your comfort level with teaching and what you might need to do to improve

  • I need to improve on linework and find better blending techniques

7. Possible health or safety concerns (AP)

  • sharp tips

Acrylic painting

Materials

1. Brands and associated quality/cost of each (student grade vs. premium)

2. Age appropriateness (select a grade and related modifications)

3. Additional resources or logistics required with the medium

4. Strengths:

  •  good at blending

  •  thick paint

  • strong hue

  • easily removable with Power Dawn dish soap.

5. Limitations (what does it not do well):

  •  The liquitex paint is thicker, so it dries quicker. I would occasionally add water to my brush to help smooth it out.

  • Stains clothing

6. Disclose your comfort level with teaching and what you might need to do to improve

  • I feel very comfortable demonstrating in acrylic paint since it is one of my favorite mediums to work with.

7. Possible health or safety concerns (AP): Acrylics and some gouaches contain trace amounts of formaldehyde as a preservative. The acrylic colors that contain toxic chemicals will have them marked on the label—these include cadmium, cobalt, manganese, chromium, and lead. They only become toxic when used for airbrushing, when sanded, or if large amounts are accidentally ingested.

Colored chalk pastels

1. Brands and associated quality/cost of each (student grade vs. premium)

2. Age appropriateness (select a grade and related modifications

  • I recommend 4th/5th grade students to explore this medium.

3. Additional resources or logistics required with the medium

4. Strengths (what does it do well)

  • blending

  • builds up well

  • great coverage

5. Limitations (what does it not do well)

  • Very messy

  • spreads very easily ( use fixable spray for finish)

6. Disclose your comfort level with teaching and what you might need to do to improve

  • I need to find a better surface material

  • research technical skills

7. Possible health or safety concerns (AP)

  • Chalkdust getting into the eyes

  • fixative spray is a toxic chemical! It should be done outside and not by young children.
